10 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Live Healthier As a Busy Mom

What to do when you’re struggling…

Are you feeling overwhelmed and struggling to reach your health goals?

Not sure if you can keep up healthy habits with everything else on your plate?

I hear you, mama.

As moms we want our children to be healthy and happy, diligently making sure we nourish their bodies and minds.

When it comes to our own health, however, we may often put our needs on the back burner or struggle to keep up with maintaining or transforming our personal wellness.

Most of us, when working towards reaching a new level of health – whether it’s improving our fitness, losing weight, detoxing our homes, making over our diets, and everything in between – will face obstacles and challenges along our way.

Our efforts may seem endlessly derailed or we may be less than impressed with our progress or just plain fed up with ourselves from time to time!

Sometimes we need a little healthy living motivation from other’s who have been there. We need to be reassured that we CAN do this.

Here are 10 tips to help you overcome obstacles and keep up your motivation to become your healthiest self as a busy mom. (Be sure to read to the end for tips and advice from real-life moms who have been there!)

FIND YOUR WHY

I say this a lot on my blog because it’s true (and it works). If we’re going to do something over the long run and be successful, it’s probably because we have a solid reason to do so. We usually don’t do things we fully don’t believe in (or not for long).

To keep up our motivation, we need to figure out what our personal why is. Sometimes the reason is made for us, such as when we’re dealing with a serious health problem (although I hope that isn’t the case, my sympathies if it is).

If not, we’ll have to determine this reason for ourselves – and it’s going to have to be important. Dig deep and figure out why you want to maintain (or repair) your health.

VISUALIZE WHAT YOU WANT

Imagine yourself having “arrived” at that healthy destination, whatever it looks like for you. How do you feel? What does a day in that life look like? Keep this picture in the forefront of your mind.

When you’re tempted to engage in an unhealthy habit, remind yourself of how amazing it feels when you make healthy choices. Imagine it and ow it will make you feel.

Our mind doesn’t differentiate between actual and imagined events. So if you imagined it, it’s as if you’ve really done it – which makes it easier to do it again!

START SMALL AND PRIORITIZE

Don’t try to implement multiple lifestyle changes all at once. Prioritize one or two new healthy habits that are most important to you and focus on those consistently until you master them. Don’t feel bad for not doing more! Stressing over it isn’t productive and only serves to demotivate you.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

As with starting small, don’t push yourself too hard too soon. Listen to what your body really needs (rest? movement? emotional support?). What healthy habits will best serve you right now? Don’t let yourself get into the habit of ignoring or masking over the signals your body is giving you.

LET GO OF PERFECTIONISM

Let’s face it – you’re going to slip up at some point. You’re going to miss a workout, eat an unhealthy meal, not get enough sleep, overdo it and a myriad of other healthy living “sins.” Expect it, learn from it, forgive yourself and move on.

As a recovering perfectionist, believe me when I say I understand how much easier said than done this is. If you’re like me, it will take practice to give yourself grace. Keep practicing.

GIVE IT TIME

A healthy lifestyle or achievement of any particular health goal won’t happen overnight. Habits take time to form and your body (and heart! and mind!) take time to heal. Focus on being as consistent as possible and try to be patient with yourself.

FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU

Your health journey is unique, encompassing your background, values, current skill set, time available and even your budget. What works for one person may not be what’s best for you and your family.

For example, once upon a time, I thought I would be able to make every household product, from laundry soap to shampoo to canned goods and beyond, all from scratch in order to ensure everything was toxin free. I drove myself crazy for a while trying to keep up with it as a busy working mom. That kind of lifestyle didn’t work for me. Would I like to live that way? Sure. But it just wasn’t realistic or sustainable in my case.

Experiment with what healthy habits best fit your lifestyle. If you’ve tried something and it isn’t working, don’t feel guilty for finding an alternative way.

TRY NEW WELLNESS PROGRAMS

Sometimes we need something new to get us excited about adopting healthy habits or to get us back on track. A new wellness book, meal plan, podcast, documentary or fitness program may be just the ticket we need to re-inspire us and re-energize our motivation.

This is exactly what I would do when I first started out. Every couple of weeks I would find something new to learn in order to keep things fresh and keep me on track (actually, I still do this). Self-education is powerful – and quite motivating!

PUSH PAST FEARS (OR BETTER YET, FACE THEM HEAD ON)

Ok, so a little mini-rant here, bear with me . . .

I get a tiny bit annoyed when people say all you need to do is ignore your fears to reach your goals.

CAN you? Absolutely.

SHOULD you always? Debateable.

In my experience, ignoring my fears only made them worse, not to mention I usually performed pretty poorly because my fear was still there tapping me on the shoulder and making me doubt myself.

It IS possible to lessen our fears (which are really just limiting beliefs) without simply pretending they don’t exist. When we do so by addressing them and giving them a voice, personal breakthroughs can happen more quickly. You can read my favorite strategy for doing so in this post.

DON’T EVER GIVE UP!

The path to transforming our lifestyles and becoming our healthiest selves can be messy. Don’t let the slip-ups or the fear of change overwhelm you and cause you to self-sabotage, get stuck or give up (or at least not for long, love).

You will probably never completely “arrive” at a so-called “healthy lifestyle,” as if once there it’s over and done. Health isn’t linear. Through the months and years our circumstances change, our goals change, the needs and stages of our families change. It truly is a journey – a dynamic process through which we learn, grow and evolve.

What is your top tip you would you give to beginners?

Start slowly. Don’t try to integrate 100 new things in your life at once or you will feel overwhelmed and nothing will stick. Try to start by implementing one new thing in your life, even if it’s simply making your own laundry powder or using a water filter instead of tap water.

I strive to find cleaner, safer and more natural products for myself, my home and my family, and to help others do the same!

JORDAN | DETOX AND PROSPER

What was/is your ultimate healthy living goal?

Get Lyme disease into remission

How long have you been incorporating healthy habits on a regular basis?

About 1 year

What was your number one struggle?

For me, it was diet. Between the Lyme disease and Lyme-induced conditions such as SIBO and leaky gut, I had developed autoimmune reactions to almost all foods. I also struggled with detoxing properly.

How did you overcome this obstacle?

I took a break from treating Lyme to focus on reversing SIBO and repairing my gut. They were blocking my ability to absorb nutrients & meds, so the treatments were pointless anyway. For about 2 weeks, I did an elemental diet based on smoothies with low FODMAP ingredients. After that period, I continue to avoid gut-damaging foods like those containing lectins. Then I started a protocol that focuses on reversing SIBO and systemic inflammation as well as repairing autonomic dysfunction by getting my body back to the ideal Omega 3:6 ratio.

What is the biggest benefit to living a healthy lifestyle you’ve experienced so far?

Being able to do activities with my kids again and spend hands-on time with them as opposed to just laying on the couch and being in the same room.

What is your top tip you would you give to beginners?

Research, research, research until you find what you think will work for you. Then stick with it long enough to give it time to work. We didn’t get to these unhealthy places overnight, so restoring your health won’t happen overnight either.

MICHELLE | SOULY RESTED

What was/is your ultimate healthy living goal?

I wanted to offer healthier choices to my family. I realized that everyone was drinking so many hundreds of calories a day from unhealthy choices, like soda. Once I learned the right fermentation techniques, my kombucha is a wonderfully carbonated fruity alternative to soda. My ultimate goal was to see everyone in our family feeling better, with more energy. The healthier guts are an added bonus!

How long have you been incorporating healthy habits on a regular basis?

I started fermenting our family’s drinks 3-4 months ago. Within just a few weeks, everyone loved it so much and I wanted everyone to be able to have at least a glass a day so I doubled my output.

What was your number one struggle?

Making time for what’s important.

How did you overcome this obstacle?

I figured I’d give this kombucha making a try. I honestly figured I’d fail pretty quickly, or we wouldn’t like the results, and I’d chalk it up as one more thing to NOT do. But wow was I surprised! We love it and it’s well worth the time I invest, once a week, in making new ferments and bottling for the 2nd ferments.

What is the biggest benefit to living a healthy lifestyle you’ve experienced so far?

So much more energy and amazingly I’ve realized that I have more time than I thought I did. I realized if I just chip away a little time to routinely work on something real-food or heritage-cooking related I can even start to do more things for my family in this area. And, bonus, my teen daughters are getting in on the act too!

What is your top tip you would you give to beginners?

Don’t be intimidated. I thought fermented drinks sounded so difficult, but after just a few weeks of learning how to do it, I feel like a pro and I’m teaching friends and sharing pieces of my scoby with neighbors. Worst case scenario, your kids see that you’re not afraid to try something new and that your health is worth investing some time into… way more important than extra time wasted on social media! Go here for my favorite (easy!) kombucha recipes!

I love these honest and real-life answers!

If we’re struggling to maintain or implement healthy habits, it can feel as if we’re personally lacking in some way. The reality is that most of us will encounter obstacles to a healthy lifestyle along the way. No one’s healthy living journey is 100% smooth sailing.

However, it’s not the struggle itself that defines us, it’s the determination we possess to push past these challenges and ultimately reach our goal.

Embrace the journey, mama – you can do this!

  1. Great tips. Like you, I wanted to make my food from scratch and I wanted to avoid as many chemicals as possible in the products I use on my baby, but as a working mom, I didn’t have the time to make baby food all the time. My compromise was to ensure that she got fresh fruits and veggies every day, but come to terms with the idea that I would never have the time or energy to prepare every meal. I have relaxed about it and do what I can to make healthy choices for both of us.
